LED light bulbs surge ahead of other energy savers

Even the lowest-scoring LED would still be a solid choice, but the excellence of these bulbs comes at price – the cheapest Best Buy costs an eye-watering £15. 

A typical compact fluorescent bulb (CFL) doesn’t produce as much light as an LED that uses the same amount of energy, but CFLs are generally cheaper. The best CFL we’ve tested costs less than £5. 

There’s a further drop in efficiency if you go for a halogen bulb, which are cheaper still. We tested three, costing £2 each, and all were very inefficient. 

Long-lasting light bulbs

Testing the lifetime of light bulbs is time-consuming – it takes three years in our test lab to verify a manufacturer’s claim that a bulb’s lifetime is 25,000 hours (the equivalent of 25 years of average use). Often, the bulb will no longer be available by the time the test is complete. 

For that reason, we don’t wait until we’ve tested the bulbs for tens of thousands of hours before publishing our results.

We measure durability by examining whether each bulb loses light over time, and whether it continues to work after we’ve tested it for 2,000 hours and switched it on and off 25,000 times.

We are keeping all the LED bulbs switched on in our test lab, and will report back on the lifetime claims for those bulbs still available when we have the results.
